What Is Truffle?
Also known as: Truffle Suite, Truffle Framework
In short
Truffle is a development framework, built under ConsenSys and now discontinued, that brought smart contract compiling, testing and deployment together in one toolkit for Ethereum and EVM-compatible networks.
In Ethereum's early years, Truffle was one of the tools that turned smart contract development into a standard workflow. It offered compiling Solidity contracts, writing tests in JavaScript, migration scripts that manage deployment to networks, and an interactive console. The package known as the Truffle Suite also included Ganache, a local test blockchain, and Drizzle, a front-end library.
In 2023, ConsenSys announced that Truffle and Ganache would be phased out and directed users to move to other tools. Today, newer frameworks such as Hardhat and Foundry are mostly preferred for new projects. Although no new features are added to Truffle anymore, it can still be encountered in the maintenance of older projects or in educational materials.
Using an unmaintained tool brings risks such as incompatibility with new Solidity versions and network upgrades, and the inability to receive security updates. For this reason, migrating projects written with Truffle to current tools is generally recommended.
