What Is Remix IDE?

Also known as: Remix, Remix Online IDE, Remix Desktop

In short

Remix IDE is an open-source development environment that runs in the browser with no installation needed, used to write, compile, test, and deploy Solidity smart contracts for Ethereum and EVM-compatible networks.

Remix is a tool developed with Ethereum Foundation support and widely used in the Ethereum ecosystem. When opened in the browser, it offers a code editor, the Solidity compiler, a panel for deploying and calling contracts, and a step-by-step debugger on a single screen. A desktop version is also available, and features such as static analysis, testing, and contract verification can be added through its plugin system.

Remix offers a low barrier to entry for someone writing their first smart contract. For example, a simple ERC-20 token contract can be written and compiled in Remix, tried out for free in the in-browser virtual blockchain environment (Remix VM), then deployed to a test network or the mainnet by connecting a wallet such as MetaMask. It is also often used in tutorials, quick prototyping, and for interacting with a contract that already exists on-chain.

For large, multi-file projects, developers generally move to command-line-based frameworks such as Hardhat or Foundry; these tools work better with automated tests, version control, and continuous integration. Auditing the contract before mainnet deployment and protecting the private keys used for deployment also matter, whichever tool is used.
