What Is Ganache?
Also known as: Ganache CLI, Ganache UI, TestRPC, Truffle Ganache
In short
Ganache is a tool developed as part of the Truffle Suite that runs a personal, local Ethereum blockchain on a computer so that Ethereum developers can test smart contracts before deploying them to a real network.
When started, Ganache creates ready-made accounts holding test ether and provides a local network that confirms transactions instantly. The developer can connect their application to this network to deploy contracts, send transactions, and debug; no real fees are paid and there is no need for testnet faucets. The version with a graphical interface makes it easier to inspect blocks, transactions, and event logs visually, while the command-line version is used in automated testing pipelines. It also has a feature to run by forking a specific moment of the mainnet.
The tool's original name was TestRPC, and for a long time it was one of the standard parts of Ethereum development together with the Truffle framework. In 2023, ConsenSys announced that it would sunset the development of Truffle and Ganache and directed users to move to other tools.
Today, Hardhat's local network (Hardhat Network) or Foundry's anvil tool is mostly used for similar functions. Old projects set up with Ganache may continue to work; however, the risk that a tool that is no longer updated will not support new Ethereum features should be kept in mind.
