What Is Teku?
Also known as: Teku Client, Teku Consensus Client, ConsenSys Teku
In short
Teku is an open-source consensus client developed by ConsenSys in Java that runs on Ethereum's Proof of Stake layer; it provides both beacon node and validator client functions.
Since The Merge, an Ethereum node requires two pieces of software working together: an execution client that runs transactions and a consensus client that manages block proposal and attestation processes. Teku falls into the second group and is used paired with one of the execution clients such as Geth, Nethermind, Besu or Erigon.
Because it is built on the Java ecosystem and designed with enterprise needs in mind, Teku may be preferred especially by large-scale staking services and institutional users. It includes features such as being able to manage many validators from a single setup, working with remote signers and offering detailed metrics for monitoring. It is distributed as open source under the Apache 2.0 license.
Client diversity is important for security on Ethereum: if a single client holds a very high share of the network, the risk that a bug in that client affects the entire network increases. Teku, together with Prysm, Lighthouse, Nimbus and Lodestar, is one of the consensus clients that contribute to this diversity.
