What Is Nimbus?

Also known as: Nimbus Client

In short

Nimbus is an open-source Ethereum consensus layer client developed by the Status team in the Nim programming language, focused on low resource consumption and designed to run even on limited hardware such as a Raspberry Pi.

In Ethereum's Proof of Stake structure, validators need a consensus client to propose and attest to blocks. Nimbus aims to perform this task with low memory and CPU usage. This approach makes it easier for individuals who want to stake to run a node at home without needing expensive servers, and it helps make the network more geographically and institutionally distributed.

Nimbus offers features such as the ability to combine the beacon node and the validator client in a single process, light client support, and fast sync options. Like other consensus clients, it is run together with an execution client such as Geth, Nethermind, or Besu. The team is also working on an execution client.

Although its share of the network is small compared with Lighthouse and Prysm, Nimbus is an important alternative for client diversity. When a single client runs on a large part of the network, a bug in that software raises the risk of disrupting finalization; having clients written in different languages side by side reduces this risk.
