What Is Lodestar?
Also known as: Lodestar Client, Lodestar Light Client, ChainSafe Lodestar
In short
Lodestar is an open-source Ethereum consensus layer client developed in TypeScript by ChainSafe; in addition to a beacon node and validator client, it also offers a light client library.
In Ethereum's Proof of Stake structure, consensus clients manage tasks such as block proposal, attestation and finalization. Lodestar is one of the clients that perform these tasks and is run together with an execution client such as Geth, Nethermind or Besu. Being written in the JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystem makes it easier for web developers to examine Ethereum's consensus layer and contribute to this infrastructure.
One of Lodestar's standout components is its light client library (Lodestar Light Client). Instead of downloading the entire chain, light clients verify block headers based on the signatures of the sync committee. This way, browsers and wallets can cryptographically check the correctness of data instead of blindly trusting the information provided by a centralized RPC provider.
Although Lodestar's share of the network is small compared with clients such as Lighthouse or Prysm, it contributes to client diversity. Because the dominance of a single client can turn a bug in that software into a risk for the whole network, the existence of alternatives written in different languages is important for Ethereum's resilience.
