What Is Mooning?

Also known as: To the Moon, Moon, Going to the Moon

In short

Mooning is crypto community slang describing a coin's or token's price rising very quickly and sharply in a short time; it derives from the slogan “to the moon.”

On social media and forums, when an asset's price takes off sharply, that asset is said to be “mooning”; rocket and moon emojis are also often used to express this expectation. Phrases such as “Wen moon?” (when will it go to the moon) are humorous expressions through which community members voice their expectation of a rally. The term has become widespread especially among memecoin communities and during bull markets.

Mooning is usually seen together with FOMO (fear of missing out): a rapidly rising asset attracts new buyers who want a share of the gains, and this demand can fuel the rally for a while longer. However, a significant portion of such moves is not sustainable and can end in sharp corrections.

Posts saying an asset is “going to the moon” are not investment advice and are sometimes used as part of organized pump and dump schemes. During periods when this kind of jargon is intense, it is important to look at the actual trading volume behind the price move and at the project's fundamentals.
