What Is Memecoin?

Also known as: Meme Coin, Meme Token

In short

A memecoin is a cryptocurrency created from internet humor, popular culture or a meme, whose value rests mostly on community interest and social media influence rather than on a technical use case.

The first and best-known memecoin is Dogecoin, created as a joke in 2013 inspired by the popular “Doge” dog meme. In the following years, many similar tokens such as Shiba Inu (SHIB) and Pepe (PEPE) emerged. Today, most memecoins can be created within minutes and without technical knowledge on networks that support smart contracts; low-fee networks such as Solana and Base have stood out in this area.

Memecoin prices are mostly driven by social media trends, celebrity posts and community excitement. This can lead to extraordinary rallies in a very short time and collapses just as fast. Many have an extremely large supply and no notable use case other than holding the token.

Memecoins are considered one of the riskiest segments of the cryptocurrency market. Creators holding large amounts of tokens and selling them, the sudden withdrawal of liquidity (rug pull), pump and dump schemes and trap contracts that block selling (honeypots) are common forms of fraud. Researching details such as token distribution and liquidity locks (DYOR) is therefore important.
