What Is MythX?

Also known as: MythX Security Analysis, MythX Smart Contract Analyzer

In short

MythX is a cloud-based security analysis service, developed by ConsenSys Diligence, that scans Ethereum smart contracts using techniques such as static analysis, symbolic execution and fuzzing to detect security vulnerabilities.

When developers submit their Solidity code to MythX, the service examines the source code and compiled bytecode with multiple analysis engines. These engines include the symbolic execution capability of the open-source tool Mythril. As a result of the analysis, known vulnerability types such as reentrancy, integer overflow, unauthorized access and unchecked external calls are reported; findings are usually mapped to Smart Contract Weakness Classification (SWC) codes.

MythX was designed to work integrated with development tools such as Truffle, Remix and Visual Studio Code. This approach aims to bring security checking into the early stages of the development process and make it a continuous process, rather than leaving it only to a pre-release audit.

Although automated analysis tools are an important first line of defense, they cannot always catch economic attacks, flawed business logic and risks arising from interactions between protocols; they can also produce false alarms. For this reason, it is recommended that they be used together with expert audits and comprehensive testing. Because the way commercial services are offered can change over time, teams also consider open-source alternatives such as Slither or Foundry's testing tools.
