What Is OpenZeppelin?

Also known as: OpenZeppelin Contracts, OZ

In short

OpenZeppelin is a software security company known for its open-source OpenZeppelin Contracts library, which offers audited, reusable smart contract components for Ethereum and EVM-compatible networks, and for smart contract security audits.

The OpenZeppelin Contracts library includes ready-made, tested implementations of token standards such as ERC-20, ERC-721, and ERC-1155, and of security modules such as access control (Ownable, AccessControl), pausability (Pausable), and reentrancy protection (ReentrancyGuard). Developers add these components to their own Solidity code through inheritance, so they do not have to write basic functionality from scratch; this lowers the chance of making common mistakes.

The library also offers proxy patterns for upgradeable contracts and governance (Governor) contracts for DAOs. Many DeFi protocols and token projects build on these components. The company also provides code audit services to protocols and publishes security research. The Contracts Wizard tool, which generates contract code based on the features you need, is also used for education and quick starts.

Using an audited library does not mean the entire project is secure. Bugs often come from incorrect configuration of components, project-specific business logic, or admin privileges in upgradeable contracts. Because there can be significant changes between major versions of the library, updates also need to be followed carefully.
