What Is Honeypot?
Also known as: Honeypot Token, Honeypot Scam, Honeypot Contract
In short
A honeypot, in the crypto world, refers to scam setups that lure victims with the promise of easy profit and lock up their funds, mainly tokens that users can buy but cannot sell because of hidden restrictions in the code.
In the most common type, the scammer creates a new token and liquidity pool on a decentralized exchange. They add hidden rules to the token's smart contract that allow only certain addresses to sell, apply a very high tax to sales by normal users, or block transfers. Because only buys appear on the chart, the price seems to rise constantly and new buyers arrive out of FOMO. The scammer finally exits by withdrawing the liquidity in the pool.
Another use of the term refers to smart contracts that at first glance appear to contain an exploitable vulnerability. A person who thinks they will make easy money sends funds to the contract but cannot get these funds back because of hidden logic. Wallets holding tokens whose private key has been made to look “accidentally” shared are likewise designed to capture the coins the victim sends for gas fees.
Against these traps, it is important to examine the token contract's verified code and ownership privileges, use independent token scanning tools, and treat unrealistic return promises with caution. These checks reduce the risk but do not eliminate it entirely.
