What Is ATH (All-Time High)?
Also known as: All-Time High, ATH, Record High
In short
ATH (All-Time High) is the highest price level a cryptocurrency or any other asset has reached since it began trading. When the price rises above the previous record, it is said to have set a new ATH.
The ATH shows the peak in an asset's entire price history and is usually expressed in US dollars; however, the same asset can peak on different dates in different currencies. For example, when the Turkish lira loses value, Bitcoin can hit a new high in lira terms while remaining below its record in dollar terms. Data sites usually show the ATH along with the percentage by which the current price is below the peak.
In technical analysis, the ATH level is seen as psychological resistance. When the price rises above this level, it is said to enter price discovery, because there is no price history of trading above it. News of a new ATH draws heavy interest in the media and on social media and can attract new participants to the market.
When the price approaches the ATH, buying at the peak under the influence of FOMO can lead to significant losses in the corrections that follow. Many cryptocurrencies are trading far below their past peaks; the fact that an asset once saw a certain level does not mean it will see it again. The opposite of ATH is ATL, which refers to the lowest price level.
