What Is Toncoin (TON)?

Also known as: TON, The Open Network, Telegram Open Network

In short

Toncoin (TON) is the native cryptocurrency of The Open Network blockchain, first designed by the Telegram team and later developed by an independent community. It is used for transaction fees, staking and payments in applications on the network.

The project was developed as the Telegram Open Network under the leadership of Telegram's founders Pavel and Nikolai Durov. Following a lawsuit brought by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Telegram withdrew from the project in 2020. Independent developers who took over the open-source code continued the network as The Open Network, and the cryptocurrency became known as Toncoin.

TON runs on Proof of Stake (PoS) and uses a multi-layer sharding architecture for scalability: the masterchain holds the network's configuration and summaries of the other chains, while workchains and their shards split as load increases, processing transactions in parallel. Smart contracts run on the TON Virtual Machine and are written in network-specific languages such as FunC or Tact.

Toncoin's standout feature is its connection to Telegram: thanks to the in-app wallet and Telegram mini apps, TON-based games and services have been able to reach a large user base. That said, Telegram and the entities developing TON are legally separate. Because the network is not EVM-compatible, tools from the Ethereum ecosystem cannot be used directly; moreover, the fast-growing ecosystem is sensitive to speculative interest focused on games and airdrops.
