What Is Snowman Consensus?
Also known as: Snowman, Snowman++, Snowman Protocol
In short
Snowman is the version of Avalanche's Snow consensus family optimized for finalizing transactions in a linear, fully ordered blockchain; the C-Chain, where smart contracts run, and the P-Chain, which manages validators, use this protocol.
The original design of the Avalanche protocol processes transactions in a directed acyclic graph (DAG) structure. This approach is efficient for mutually independent payments, but it is not suitable for cases such as smart contracts, where transactions need a strict ordering. Snowman uses the Snowball mechanism to decide which block to accept at each block height, and thus produces a classic, linear blockchain. In other words, Snowman is the chain-based variant, not the DAG-based one.
On Avalanche's primary network, the P-Chain and the EVM-compatible C-Chain run on Snowman. The X-Chain, used for asset transfers, originally used the DAG-based Avalanche protocol; in a later network upgrade, this chain was also moved to the linear Snowman structure. Snowman++ is an add-on that organizes the block proposal process and reduces conflicting block proposals and unnecessary traffic on the network.
Snowman is also the default consensus engine for custom blockchains built on Avalanche. Thanks to its probabilistic approach, transactions are generally finalized within a few seconds. Security depends on the stake being sufficiently distributed and the share of malicious validators staying below a certain threshold.
