What Is PoET (Proof of Elapsed Time)?

Also known as: Proof of Elapsed Time, PoET

In short

Proof of Elapsed Time (PoET) is a consensus mechanism in which each node waits a random amount of time and the node whose wait time expires first produces the next block, with fairness ensured by a trusted hardware environment.

PoET was developed by Intel and used in the permissioned blockchain framework Hyperledger Sawtooth. In the method, each participant receives a random wait time inside a trusted execution environment (TEE) such as Intel SGX. The node whose time expires first publishes the block together with a certificate proving it waited; other nodes verify that this certificate was really produced by trusted hardware.

The goal is to imitate the race in Proof of Work without spending energy. Leader selection works like a lottery; each node's chance of winning is roughly equal, and investing in mining hardware gives no advantage. This feature has appealed to projects seeking a low-cost, predictable consensus in enterprise settings.

PoET's biggest limit is the need to trust a specific hardware manufacturer. Security rests on the assumption that technologies like SGX work correctly, and vulnerabilities have occasionally been discovered in these environments. If an attacker can break the trusted environment, they can forge the wait time. For this reason, PoET has been preferred in permissioned networks rather than public ones.
