What Is Nest Protocol?

Also known as: NEST Oracle, NEST

In short

Nest Protocol is a decentralized price oracle project that produces price data directly on-chain: quoters post collateral when reporting a price, and arbitrage validates it. Its native token is NEST.

Classic oracles rely on data providers that collect prices from exchanges and carry them to the blockchain. Nest Protocol uses a different approach called quotation mining: a participant who reports a price deposits two assets (for example, ETH and a stablecoin) as collateral in proportion to the reported price. If the reported price deviates from the market, other participants can take this collateral at the reported price and earn an arbitrage profit. In this way, reporting a wrong price is punished economically.

Quotes that are not challenged within a set verification period are accepted as valid prices and can be used by smart contracts. Quoters are rewarded with the NEST token for this service. Over time, the project has also moved toward building financial instruments, such as on-chain derivatives, on top of its oracle infrastructure.

The security of this model depends on having enough arbitrageurs and liquidity to correct wrong prices. In periods of low participation, price updates can be delayed or become open to manipulation. Protocols choosing a price oracle evaluate such economic assumptions by comparing them with alternatives based on data provider networks like Chainlink.
