What Is IDO (Initial DEX Offering)?
Also known as: Initial DEX Offering, DEX Token Sale, Launchpad Sale
In short
An IDO (initial DEX offering) is a fundraising method in which a crypto project offers its tokens for sale for the first time through a decentralized exchange (DEX) or an affiliated launchpad platform, usually opening trading right after the sale.
In an IDO, the sale and distribution are carried out through smart contracts. Participants connect their wallets and receive tokens in exchange for a stablecoin or the network's native coin. After the sale, part of the funds raised, together with part of the tokens, is added to a liquidity pool on the decentralized exchange; this way, the token becomes tradable without waiting to be listed on a centralized exchange. Many launchpads make the right to participate conditional on staking the platform's own token or getting on a whitelist.
Compared with an ICO, this model offers faster liquidity and access without needing a centralized intermediary; unlike an IEO, the sale is run by smart contracts rather than by an exchange company. On the other hand, in IDOs, vetting of the kind centralized exchanges apply is generally more limited.
On the risk side, sharp price swings at listing, bots dominating the sale and first trades, low liquidity, and scams such as rug pulls stand out. The token unlock schedule, team allocations, and contract audits are the main elements examined when evaluating an IDO.
