What Is FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt)?
Also known as: FUD, Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt, Fear Uncertainty and Doubt, Spreading FUD
In short
FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) is a community term for often exaggerated or unverified news and statements that create a negative perception about a cryptocurrency, project, or the market in general.
Before the crypto world, the term was used in the marketing and technology industries to describe the tactic of creating doubt about competing products. In the crypto community, rumors of regulatory bans, claims of exchange bankruptcy, news of security vulnerabilities, or posts saying large investors are selling can be described as FUD. Such content can lead to panic selling and short-lived sharp price drops.
There is an important distinction: not every piece of negative news is FUD. Legitimate criticism of a project's real problems is also sometimes brushed off by the community as “FUD.” Warnings about some platforms that later collapsed have been seen to be dismissed as FUD before the collapse.
For this reason, it is important to evaluate the source of a news item, its evidence, and the possible interests of the person spreading it. As the counterpart of FUD, FOMO is used to express excessive optimism and fear of missing out; the two concepts are frequently used together to describe market sentiment.
