What Is Erigon?

Also known as: Turbo-Geth

In short

Erigon is an open-source execution layer client for the Ethereum network, written in Go and focused on efficiency and low disk usage; it is particularly known for its use in archive nodes that store the entire historical state.

Erigon began development as a fork of Geth under the name Turbo-Geth, and over time its architecture was largely rewritten and it turned into a separate client. Thanks to redesigning the database structure with a flat model and the staged sync method that splits synchronization into stages, it aims for less disk space and shorter synchronization time for running an archive node.

After The Merge, an Ethereum node runs an execution client and a consensus client together. Erigon also offers a built-in consensus client called Caplin; users can also run it with an external consensus client such as Lighthouse or Prysm if they wish. Erigon's fast access to historical data is useful for block explorers, data indexers and RPC service providers.

Client diversity is important for Ethereum's resilience: if a large part of the network depends on a single client, a bug in that client can affect the entire network. Together with Geth, Nethermind and Besu, Erigon is one of the execution clients that contribute to this diversity. Because it is rapidly evolving software, it may be necessary to pay attention to database compatibility during major version transitions.
