What Is Block Explorer?
Also known as: Blockchain Explorer, Blockchain Scanner, Chain Explorer
In short
A block explorer is an online tool that lets anyone search for and view the blocks, transactions, addresses and balances on a blockchain through a web browser. It works like a search engine for blockchain data.
Block explorers organize the data they receive from nodes connected to the network and present it in a readable interface. A user can reach the relevant record by entering a transaction hash (TXID), a wallet address or a block number. mempool.space for Bitcoin and Etherscan for Ethereum are common examples; Solana, Tron and other networks have their own explorers as well.
The most common use is checking the status of a transfer. For example, a user withdrawing coins from a crypto exchange to their wallet can paste the transaction hash provided by the exchange into the explorer to see whether the transaction has been confirmed, how many confirmations it has received and the fee paid. Ethereum explorers also show smart contract code, token transfers and current network fees, and offer the ability to interact directly with contracts.
Block explorers make the transparency of blockchain tangible; however, this transparency is also important from a privacy standpoint. Once an address is linked to your identity, the entire transaction history of that address can be seen by everyone. Because explorers are centralized services, they can be unavailable or display data incorrectly; the most definitive verification is done with one's own node. It is also important to check the address bar to guard against fake explorer sites.
