What Is Account Abstraction?
Also known as: AA, ERC-4337, Smart Account, Smart Contract Wallet
In short
Account abstraction is an approach on Ethereum and EVM-compatible networks that lets user accounts, instead of being tied to a single private key, have flexible verification, fee payment, and security rules programmable through smart contract logic.
On Ethereum, there are traditionally two account types: externally owned accounts (EOAs) controlled by a private key, and contract accounts that run on code. An EOA is required to initiate transactions; this means that losing the key means losing the funds and that fees must be paid in ETH. Account abstraction relaxes these constraints with smart contract wallets.
ERC-4337, the most common implementation, works without changing the Ethereum protocol. Users create requests called “UserOperations” instead of direct transactions; bundlers collect these requests and send them in a single transaction to the shared EntryPoint contract. Contracts called “paymasters” allow fees to be covered by an application or paid in other tokens such as stablecoins. EIP-7702, which came with the Pectra upgrade, has also opened the way for existing EOAs to benefit from smart account features.
This makes possible social recovery (regaining access through trusted people if a key is lost), batch execution of multiple transactions with a single approval, spending limits, and different signature methods such as fingerprints. On the other hand, smart contract wallets require careful design against contract bugs and additional gas costs.
